UPI not working can be frustrating, especially when you are in a hurry. You have picked up everything you need and reached the checkout. You scan the QR code, enter the amount, and tap 'Pay'. Instead of a successful payment confirmation, your screen shows 'transaction failed'. You try again, but the same message appears.

While it might disrupt your transaction, it is important to understand why UPI is not working and how to resolve the issue. Let us look at some common reasons why a "UPI not working" message may appear.

Common reasons behind UPI not working

There could be several reasons why UPI is not working, but the most common reasons for UPI payment failures are:

    Incorrect UPI PIN or ID

You have to deal with a UPI failed transaction if you enter a wrong PIN or the UPI ID is invalid.

Lack of sufficient funds in your bank account

If there are insufficient funds in your bank account, you will not be able to make a payment using UPI.

    Poor internet connection

A poor internet connection may cause problems when making a payment.

    Bugs in the UPI app

Glitches in the application or an old version may lead to UPI payment failure.

    Bank server maintenance or downtime

Sometimes, your bank's or the recipient's server may be undergoing maintenance, which can lead to delays or transaction failures.

    Exceeded the transaction limit

According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), banks and UPI apps, there are applicable prescribed limits on the UPI transaction value. If your transaction exceeds the specified limit, it might be declined, resulting in a UPI failed transaction.

How to fix a failed UPI transaction?

UPI transactions fail in some instances. However, a few simple tricks can help you fix a UPI failed transaction. These tips are as follows:

    • Check your daily UPI transaction limit
If you have made several UPI payments during the day, chances are you may have reached your transaction limit. Always verify transaction limits before making a payment.
    • Verify the recipient's UPI ID
A UPI failed transaction could be a result of entering an incorrect UPI ID. Before making any UPI payment, double-check that the recipient's UPI ID is correct to avoid a payment failure.
    • Enter the correct UPI PIN
Entering the wrong UPI PIN will cause the transaction to fail. If you have forgotten your PIN, you can reset it through your UPI app using the "Forgot Password” option.
    • Check your internet connection
If you are experiencing poor connectivity, switch to a Wi-Fi network or a stronger mobile data network, restart your device, or toggle aeroplane mode on and off before retrying the payment.
    • Try another linked bank account
Linking multiple bank accounts provides a backup during an emergency if one bank is experiencing technical issues. If your bank's servers are temporarily unavailable, you can make the payment using another savings account linked to your UPI app.
    • Check if your bank's servers are down
Sometimes, the issue isn't with your app but with your bank. During periods of high traffic or scheduled maintenance, bank servers may be temporarily unavailable, causing UPI failed transactions. Waiting a few minutes before trying again often resolves the issue.

How to check if the UPI server is down?

UPI not working? Here’s how you know if the server is down:

    • Check the transaction status: If you are making a payment and the UPI server is down, your UPI app may display a pop-up like "Transaction Failed", "Server Provider Not Available", or "Bank Server Unavailable".
    • Check messages: Banks often inform customers in advance about scheduled maintenance through SMS, email, or in-app notifications. Remember to check any messages from your bank to avoid unexpected downtime.
    • Verify through your bank's app or website: Some banks display service status updates or maintenance alerts there.

    When to contact your bank?

    • If a UPI transaction fails but the amount gets debited from your account, it is usually reversed automatically within the RBI-prescribed timeframe.
    • If the refund for UPI payment failure is delayed beyond these timelines, you may be eligible for compensation as per RBI guidelines.
    • In such cases, contact your bank or raise a complaint through your UPI app.

Axis Bank offers end-to-end support to all its account holders. You can file a complaint online or contact the customer care department to ensure seamless UPI transactions.

For a seamless digital payment experience, customers can use UPI by Axis Bank to send and receive money instantly, pay merchants, and manage everyday transactions securely.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1. What to do if the UPI transaction fails but money is deducted?

If your account has been debited but the UPI transaction failed, check the payment status and wait until the RBI-prescribed refund period ends. If the refund is delayed further, please contact your bank or raise a complaint through your app regarding the UPI payment failure.

    2. How long does the UPI downtime last?

It may last from a few minutes to a few hours. You can contact your bank or check for downtime updates to see when UPI will start working.

    3. How to prevent UPI transaction failure?

Ensure you have a stable internet connection and a sufficient account balance. Verify the recipient's UPI ID and PIN before making a payment to avoid payment failures.

    4. Can you use UPI if the bank server is down?

    5. How long does it take for a refund if a UPI transaction fails?

As per RBI guidelines, refunds are generally processed within T+1 days for person-to-person transfers and within T+5 days for merchant payments, where T is the transaction date.
