A UPI ID is something that almost every smartphone user in India has typed at least once, whether splitting a dinner bill or paying the local vegetable vendor.

So, what is a UPI ID exactly?

It is a unique identifier that lets you send and receive money instantly, without sharing your bank account details. Wondering how it works in daily life and why it has become so popular? Read on to get a complete understanding.

UPI ID meaning and full form

A UPI ID, short for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) ID, is a unique virtual address tied to your bank account. The meaning of UPI ID is straightforward. It works much like an email address for money, letting you send or receive funds without revealing your account number, IFSC code, or branch details.

Banks may pair the UPI ID with their own mobile banking apps for added convenience. For instance, you can open savings account online with Axis Bank and link it instantly to a UPI ID for quick, secure transfers.

What is a UPI ID example?

Every UPI ID follows a recognisable pattern: a name or number, followed by "@" and the bank or app's identifier. A typical UPI ID example looks like "anita123@axisbank" or "9876543210@axisbank".

Here, the first part can be your name, mobile number, or even part of your email ID, while the part after "@" indicates which bank or UPI app is handling the account. The first part can be customised as per your needs.

A UPI ID is essentially your Virtual Payment Address (VPA). Once your bank account is mapped to it, it becomes the bridge through which money moves in and out, without anyone seeing your account number, IFSC code, or branch details. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Open a UPI-enabled app like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.

Step 2: Enter the recipient's mobile number or UPI ID or scan their QR code.

Step 3: Enter the amount to be paid.

Step 4: Authorise the transaction by entering the UPI PIN.

Step 5: The amount is transferred within a few seconds to the recipient’s bank account that is linked to that UPI ID.

Key features of a UPI ID

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the body behind UPI, reported that UPI processed 24,162 crore transactions during FY 2025–26. This scale of transactions was only possible because every UPI ID works reliably across apps and banks.

    • Uniqueness: Every UPI ID is uniquely associated with a user profile and linked bank account, so digital payments always land in the right place.
    • Easy recognition: Instead of long account numbers and IFSC codes, a UPI ID looks as simple as name@bankname.
    • Flexibility:You can link multiple bank accounts to a single UPI app and switch between them while paying.
    • Security: Every transaction needs UPI PIN authentication, keeping unauthorised access out.
    • Round-the-clock availability: Payments go through 24/7, including weekends and holidays, unlike traditional transfer methods with fixed banking hours.
    • Works across multiple apps: The same linked bank accounts can generate separate UPI IDs on different UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm.

How to create a UPI ID

Creating a UPI ID is simple, and you can generate one by following these steps:

    • Step 1: Download a UPI payment app or your banking app from your app store.
    • Step 2: Enter your mobile number. If you are using a dual SIM phone, pick the number you want to register for UPI.
    • Step 3: The app sends a verification SMS from your number to confirm it's active and in your possession.
    • Step 4: Choose your bank name from the list shown. This step only works if the mobile number you entered matches the one registered with your bank, since that's how the app retrieves your bank account details.
    • Step 5: Set up a UPI PIN if you are linking your bank account for the first time. This requires your debit card details for verification.
    • Step 6: Your bank account is now linked via UPI, and your UPI ID is ready to use for your first payment.

How to find your UPI ID

If you have forgotten where to look, finding your UPI ID is quick and differs slightly depending on the app you use.

    • Step 1: PhonePe: Open the app, tap your profile picture in the top left corner, and your UPI ID will be listed there.
    • Step 2: Google Pay: Tap your profile photo in the top right, go to "Bank account", select your linked account, and your UPI ID appears under the account details.
    • Step 3: Paytm: Tap the profile icon at the top left and check the profile screen; your UPI ID is displayed clearly.
    • Step 4: BHIM: Open the app and head to "Profile" from the menu to view your UPI ID.

How to send and receive money using a UPI ID

Transfer money through a UPI ID in just a few taps, regardless of which method you pick.

    To send money:

    • Via UPI ID: Open your UPI app, select "Pay," enter the recipient's UPI ID, confirm the name displayed, enter the amount, and authorise with your UPI PIN.
    • Via mobile number: Choose "Pay to Contact" or enter the mobile number registered with UPI, then fill in the amount and PIN.
    • Via QR code: Tap "Scan & Pay," scan the recipient's UPI QR code, enter the amount, and confirm with your UPI PIN.
    • Via bank account and IFSC code: Enter the recipient's account number, IFSC, and name directly, then confirm with your PIN.

    To receive money:

    • Simply share your UPI ID, mobile number, or QR code with the sender.
    • Once they complete the payment, the amount reflects in your UPI-enabled bank account almost instantly.

How to link multiple bank accounts to a UPI ID

You can link multiple bank accounts to your UPI enabled app and select the preferred account for transactions.

    • Step 1: Open the UPI app
    • Step 2: Go to the payment section of the app
    • Step 3: There, you would find the option to link bank accounts
    • Step 4: You can add multiple bank accounts in the app

Benefits of using a UPI ID for payments
