Your Axis Bank Debit or Credit Card and account are completely safe. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s guidelines, they are not shared or saved with any other merchant, vendor, or partner.
Tokenisation refers to replacing actual card details with a unique identifier called the token. This is unique for a combination of card, token requester (i.e., the entity that accepts the customer’s request for tokenisation of a card and passes it on to the card network to issue a corresponding token), and merchant.
A tokenised card transaction is considered
safer as the actual card details are not stored or shared with the
merchant during transaction processing. Earlier, the merchants could
store card details such
as card number and expiry, leaving sensitive information at risk of
misuse.
Post-tokenisation, merchants would store only the token details and not
the card details. Actual card details are available only to the issuer
(Axis Bank) and network (Visa/Mastercard/RuPay). This means that
even if the data gets compromised at the merchant’s end, your card
details are safe. Since the token is unique for every merchant, data
compromise at one merchant would not affect other merchants,
unlike at present where you are advised to replace your card.
Tokenisation applies per card and merchant. If you want to tokenise your add-on cards, you must generate tokens for them at the merchant website or app.
The last four digits of your card and the bank name are displayed on the merchant app or website. You can identify the card based on these details.
Once the card is tokenised and the details are stored with the merchant, they will be used to initiate online payments. You will not need your card number to process the transactions. The last four digits and your bank name can be used to identify your card. This helps you make online payments as you currently do using an OTP (one-time password).
All Axis Bank Debit and Credit Cards can be tokenised on your boAt Payments Wearable devices.
If your existing card is replaced or renewed, the tokens created on it will expire. You will need to tokenise your new card again with your preferred merchants. The tokens are not stored with merchants after your card expires.
