Managing your savings can often feel like a big task, especially when switching jobs. To ease this process, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) introduced the Universal Account Number (UAN). This unique 12-digit identifier serves as a single access point for all your PF Accounts, ensuring ease of management throughout your career.

After your EPF UAN activation, you can check your PF balance whenever you want, transfer or withdraw funds easily, track your employer’s contributions, and even download your passbook online. In this guide, let's understand UAN no. meaning, why it’s important, how it benefits you, how to activate it, and how it makes managing your EPF much easier for employees across India.

What is UAN number?

The Universal Account Number UAN is one of the most crucial initiatives introduced by the EPFO to ease employee provident fund management.

Earlier, employees had to deal with multiple PF Accounts whenever they switched jobs, making fund transfer or withdrawal cumbersome. With the Universal Account Number, this process has become seamless, transparent, and employee-friendly.

The UAN no. meaning refers to a unique 12-digit number that links all PF accounts under one identity. Each employee receives a permanent UAN, which remains the same across different organisations and throughout their career. This number serves as a central universal identifier to consolidate all PF Accounts. Once allotted, your UAN remains constant, regardless of how many times you change jobs.

Employees can check their EPF balance, initiate withdrawals, or transfer funds online through the UAN login process on the EPFO member portal. The Universal Account Number (UAN) also ensures transparency by allowing employees to monitor employer contributions. With services like EPF UAN activation, linking UAN with Aadhaar, and online claim facilities, employees now have complete control over their PF funds. For all your PF needs, the UAN Portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in) puts everything in one place. View your account details, update your KYC, and even raise withdrawal requests online without having to visit an EPFO office. In addition, it helps reduce paperwork, minimise delays, and ensure faster processing of requests. It also promotes financial discipline by encouraging employees to keep track of their savings and plan for the future.Your queries and doubts regarding UAN and KYC will be addressed by the EPFO on its helpline number 1800118005 or through email at

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is vital for employees and employers, offering various benefits that ease provident fund management:

  • Single identification:UAN serves as a permanent number that remains with employees throughout their careers, even if they change jobs multiple times. It eliminates the need to maintain multiple PF numbers. Your UAN accompanies you wherever you work; it is your lifetime EPF identity
  • Consolidation of PF Accounts:Multiple PF Accounts created over job changes are linked under one UAN, eliminating the need to manage separate account numbers. This consolidation prevents dormant accounts and simplifies long-term fund management. Every time you switch to a different job, you are assigned another EPF member ID, but it is always linked to the same UAN. This means that all of your retirement funds are always combined and easier to track.
  • Seamless fund transfers: It makes transferring EPF balances between employers easy, avoiding delays and complex procedures. Employees no longer have to depend on physical forms or repeated employer approvals. Simply provide your UAN to your new employer, who will then transfer your PF balance online in just a few steps.
  • Enhanced security:Linking Aadhaar with UAN ensures authentication, minimises fraudulent claims, and improves overall system reliability. This digital verification reduces the risk of identity theft and unauthorised access. It gives employees confidence that their hard-earned savings are protected. Aadhaar authentication accelerates claim settlement and secures your account in such a way that only you can have access to your money.
  • Transparency in contributions:Employees can monitor employer contributions in real time, reducing the chances of discrepancies. This builds trust and ensures employees are aware of timely deposits in their PF Accounts. Regular monitoring also helps employees stay updated on their retirement savings. Want to check your EPF passbook? You can download it anytime from the UAN portal to understand exactly what you and your employer have contributed each month.
  • Convenient online access:Through UAN activation, employees can check balances, withdraw funds, and track claims digitally without visiting EPF offices. This reduces paperwork and provides 24/7 access to essential services. Employees gain complete control over their provident fund from the comfort of their homes. You can also update your phone number, email address, or bank information on the UAN portal itself. Your bank details require approval from an employer, while everything else can be updated yourself. In short, the Universal Account Number UAN safeguards employees’ retirement savings while making PF management efficient, transparent, and secure.

The UAN Account number is generated and allotted by the EPFO through your employer. Here’s how to check UAN number:

  • Through an employer:: To generate a UAN, the employer logs on to the EPF Employer Portal, fills in information related to an employee, like date of birth, PAN, Aadhaar, and bank account details, and links the newly generated UAN with the PF account of the employee. If you have an existing UAN, the new employer will link your PF Account with the same UAN.
  • Via the EPFO portal: Employees can also find their Universal Account Number (UAN) by checking the EPFO portal and entering details like Aadhaar, PAN, or Member ID. The portal also allows employees to track their PF status and download passbooks once the UAN is activated. If you are looking for your UAN, go to the EPFO UAN portal and click on 'Know Your UAN'. Enter your registered mobile number, get the OTP on your registered mobile number, and then enter your name, date of birth, and either your PAN, Aadhaar, or member ID.
  • Check your salary slip:You can also find your UAN on your monthly payslip; it is usually indicated as 'UAN' followed by a 12-digit number.

Once assigned a UAN account, it remains with you throughout your career, without any limitations on the number of jobs you might change. You get assigned only one UAN; it follows you as you move from one employer to another. When you join any new organisation, you should share your already assigned UAN through Form-11 so that the new PF account gets linked properly.

To use EPFO’s online services, employees must complete the EPF UAN activation process. Activation enables full digital access to PF-related facilities and ensures hassle-free account management. Please note that UAN activation can be done through the Umang app only with effect from 1st Aug, 2025.

Steps for activation:

  • Open the UMANG application and click on UAN Activation.
  • Enter your UAN, Aadhaar number, and mobile number. Accept Aadhaar verification by checking the box.
  • Click on "Send OTP." If asked, download the Aadhaar Face RD App and input the OTP you receive.
  • The system verifies your UAN and Aadhaar in the EPFO records.
  • Proceed with face authentication. Select the consent box, click on Face Authentication, and then complete the face scan using the API provided by the UIDAI.
  • After verification, your UAN is activated, and you are sent an SMS containing the UAN and a temporary password. The system also updates your photo and address in the EPFO records.

Once activated, you can access your PF Account online, track contributions, download your passbook, and avail all EPFO UAN services without any manual intervention. Upon successful activation, you will receive a password on your registered mobile number to log in to your account. This step is important to gain transparency and complete control over your provident fund.

Documents required to open a UAN

Employees need to provide the following documents for UAN creation and KYC verification:

  • Your bank account number, IFSC code, and your branch name.
  • A photo ID-Aadhaar card, voter ID, passport, or driver's license are all acceptable.
  • As address proof, use your Aadhaar, a recent utility bill, or your rental agreement.
  • Remember your PAN card; it's required to link with your UAN.
  • If you have an ESIC card, include that as well.

These documents help in verifying your identity and linking your UAN with Aadhaar for quick and seamless online transactions. Make sure your KYC is updated; this helps EPFO services work efficiently and makes claim processing faster. Providing accurate details ensures smooth activation, prevents discrepancies in PF records, and speeds up the entire claim settlement. You will have to upload the scanned copies of these KYC documents on the UAN portal. Once uploaded, the employer has to digitally approve these documents, except for mobile number and email ID updates, which get processed instantly after OTP verification.

3. Online facilities:With EPF UAN activation, employees can submit claims, withdraw funds, and check balances online, making the entire process quick and more convenient.
