Debit Card
Debit Card PIN generation is the final step required in the process to start using your card. It is required whenever you receive your new Debit Card. In addition to this, if you ever lose or misplace your Debit Card, you may need to change the existing PIN by generating an instant Debit Card PIN. Let us understand the process of Debit Card PIN generation in detail.
In this era of cashless transactions, a Debit Card is your trusty companion and the four-digit PIN ensures secure access to your finances. Banks usually provide an initial PIN, which you are expected to change so that it stays confidential. This guarantees the security of your ATM card during cash withdrawals or any online transactions. You can complete the ATM Card PIN generation process at any time and as frequently as you desire.
There are three main ways for instant PIN generation, each offering its own advantages and convenience, and those are as follows:
1. Using an ATM machine
2. Through Net Banking
3. Using phone banking
Modern banking practices offer Savings Account holders the convenience of easily generating a new ATM Card PIN through various channels. For instance, the Easy Access Digital Savings Account from Axis Bank offers an Instant Virtual Debit Card that can be easily activated and offers cashback on online spends.
Generally speaking, ATM PIN generation methods can be broadly categorised into two groups: one involves traditional physical paper mailers, while the other involves a Green PIN. The Green PIN is a temporary PIN or an OTP that may expire within a few minutes, which is helpful in digital generation methods.
1. Using Net Banking
Step 1: Log in to your bank's portal.
Step 2: Find the "Cards" section and select the option of "Change PIN."
Step 3: Here, you'll need to fill in the details of your current Debit Card and follow the prompts, often involving authenticating with an OTP.
Step 4: When all the steps are completed, you'll be asked to input a new four-digit PIN.
You will receive a confirmation message. Then, your new PIN is ready to use!
2. How to generate a Debit Card PIN online using the mobile app?
Step 1: Open your bank's mobile app and log in securely.
Step 2: Locate the "Card Services" section and select "Change PIN."
Step 3: Here, you'll need to fill in the details of your current Debit Card and follow the prompts, often involving authenticating with an OTP.
Step 4: Choose a new four-digit PIN.
Step 5: Confirm your selection and receive the confirmation notification.
The above two methods can be used if you have active Net Banking. If you face a problem logging in, you can also use offline ways to generate your ATM PIN.
1. How to set PIN for a new Debit Card in ATM?
Step 1: Insert your Debit Card and choose the 'Forgot/Create PIN' option.
Step 2: You might be asked to enter the temporary PIN provided by your bank. You also might be required to enter details such as your bank account number and registered mobile number. Some bank ATMs present you with options like 'Generate OTP' or 'Validate OTP.' In such cases, opt for 'Generate OTP'.
Step 3: Once the details are verified, you'll receive the OTP on your registered mobile number.
Step 4: Enter the OTP and confirm to set your new PIN.
2. How to generate an ATM PIN via Customer Care?
Step 1: Call the customer care contact number from your registered mobile number.
Step 2: Select your preferred language, and find the ATM and Prepaid Services option.
Step 3: You'll have to verify your identity through your security questions, bank account number, Debit Card number, or an OTP.
Step 4: Listen carefully to follow the next prompts. You will receive an OTP that can be used to create the Debit Card PIN at an ATM near you.
3. How to create a PIN using SMS?
You can complete Debit Card PIN generation by SMS using the SMS PIN creation option. Depending on your bank, you'll need to send a specific message code to the specified number to get the OTP.
Note that if you generate the PIN through SMS, you must still visit any ATM to set a new PIN.
Some banks may impose a new Debit Card PIN generation time limit. So be mindful of these limits to avoid any inconvenience.

The process of Debit Card PIN generation has evolved to accommodate the digital age, offering a range of options to suit different preferences. Remember, your PIN is your key to secure transactions, so keep it safe. If there are multiple incorrect attempts to enter the ATM PIN, the card may be automatically blocked for 24 hours as a security measure. This prevents unauthorised individuals from withdrawing money or performing any transactions. If you ever misplace it, it is advisable to promptly block the card to prevent any unauthorised use and safeguard your account.
