Travel Insurance sounds boring—until you need it

The importance of Travel Insurance hit me only after a jungle trail, a twisted ankle, and a big clinic bill.

Key insights

I didn’t think much about that tiny checkbox. You know the one—“Add Travel Insurance for ₹600?” I barely glanced at it before skipping ahead, assuming nothing serious ever happens on a five-day trip to Bali with friends.

I mean, we weren’t climbing a mountain. Just beach-hopping, café-crawling, and pretending we had our lives together. What could go wrong?

Spoiler: everything costs more when you least expect it. Especially medical bills—in a foreign currency.

This isn’t dramatic. It’s just a real story from someone who learned the hard (and expensive) way that skipping Travel Insurance risks more than just your baggage.

Let’s set the scene: Bali, sunsets, and no insurance

I was hyped for my bucket-list adventure. My first international trip with friends—flights booked, outfits planned, playlists on point. Somewhere in the booking process, there it was: “Add Travel Insurance for ₹600?”

My brain? “₹600 for what? We’re just going to chill, not base jump.”

So yeah, I skipped it. It seemed to be optional and unnecessary.

Huge mistake.

Day 2: Burnt, bumped, and broke

We tried ATV riding in Ubud, Bali. I lost control on a muddy trail, twisted my ankle, and couldn’t walk properly. Not ideal when your stay involves lots of stairs and zero elevators.

A quick visit to a private clinic turned into:

  • Consultation fees
  • X-ray
  • Painkillers
  • Grab rides back and forth
  • Cancelled water sports (no refunds)

Total cost? Around $220 (₹18,000+) for one bad landing.

That ₹600 insurance? Would’ve covered almost all of it. That’s when the importance of Travel Insurance became very real to me.

Why I’ll never skip Travel Insurance again

Look, I used to think Travel Insurance was for people carrying folders and printed itineraries. But it's for people like us, who plan the vibe and figure out logistics later.

Here’s what a decent international policy actually covers:

  • Medical emergencies: Whether it’s a stomach bug, allergic reaction, or a twisted ankle in the middle of a jungle trail—coverage up to $50,000–$100,000 usually helps you avoid panic-spending your savings and maintain your peace of mind.
  • Trip delays or cancellations: Flight got delayed 12 hours? Got COVID before departure? You’re covered for missed bookings, extra hotel nights, and rearranged flights.
  • Lost or delayed baggage: If your suitcase takes a detour to Singapore while you’re stuck in Denpasar, insurance covers essentials—clothes, toiletries, and chargers.
  • Personal liability: Break something at your stay or crash a rented scooter? This covers damages, so you’re not paying out of pocket.
  • 24x7 emergency assistance: Think global hotlines, support contacts, and claim help in your time zone.

See, I learnt it the hard way. Understanding the importance of Travel Insurance isn’t about expecting disaster, it’s about being wise in your financial and life decisions.

But do you really need it for short trips?

Yes. Even if you’re going for just three days.

Travel doesn’t care how long your trip is. One wrong step, one delayed flight, or one piece of lost luggage and suddenly you’re spending hundreds in a foreign currency, not rupees.

Never skip Travel Insurance thinking, “it’s just a quick trip.” Risks aren’t checking your calendar.

What to look for in a Travel Insurance plan

Not all policies are built the same. Here's what you should be looking at—not just the lowest price.

  • Medical cover: Healthcare abroad is expensive. It is essential to keep a suitable medical cover specially for international trips.
  • Trip cancellation/delay: Refunds for flights, hotels, or bookings you can’t use due to unexpected delays, sickness, or emergencies.
  • Baggage loss/delay: Coverage for essentials if your bag is lost, delayed, or damaged.
  • Medical evacuation: Covers airlifting or transferring you to the nearest proper hospital if the local facility can’t handle it.
  • 24x7 claims & assistance: Choose a plan with app-based support, international hotlines, or messaging help.
  • Cashless hospital tie-ups: Super helpful in emergencies—no upfront payments, just ID and policy details.
  • Know your plan type: There’s single-trip (short vacations), multi-trip (frequent flyers), student (for study abroad), and long-term (backpackers/digital nomads). Pick what fits your travel profile.

Bottom line? You’re not just buying coverage—you’re buying peace of mind. Remember that the importance of Travel Insurance only feels optional until you wish you had it.

Expensive lesson, but worth sharing

Do I regret the trip? Not at all. I still had fun once I stopped limping. I came back with memories and a fat bill to match.

But I do regret skipping that ₹600 checkbox like it meant nothing. Because now I know exactly what skipping Travel Insurance risks—your money, your plans, and your peace of mind.

Now? I always add Travel Insurance. It’s like power backup—you don’t think about it until everything shuts down.
